Do I have to mark allergens on the menu?
Yes. For non-prepacked food (dishes and drinks in hospitality) the guest must have access to information on the 14 allergens in Annex II of Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 (gluten, milk, eggs, nuts, peanuts, soya, fish, crustaceans, molluscs, celery, mustard, sesame, sulphites, lupin). How (on the menu, on a board, or orally on request backed by a written list) is set by national rules; in Croatia the menu or a visible notice is usual. Checked by the State Inspectorate (sanitary inspection).
- Who must?
- Anyone serving food and drink: a café, restaurant, pizzeria, pastry shop, catering, accommodation with breakfast.
- What to do?
- For every dish and drink list which of the 14 allergens it contains (and traces, if any).
- Add allergen marks to the menu or a notice "allergen information on request" with a written list the staff keep at hand.
- Train the staff on what to answer and where the list is.
- Where to file?
- Nothing is filed; the information stays on the premises.
- Who checks?
- State Inspectorate (sanitary inspection)
- Fine

We are checking the fine in the source; until then we do not write a number.
- What if I am already late?
- Make the allergen list per dish and put the notice in the menu; it is an afternoon of work.
What gets said wrong online
Wrong: "It only applies to prepacked food."
Right: For non-prepacked food allergens are mandatory under art. 44 of Regulation 1169/2011; the way of indicating them is set by national rules.
