Do I have to offer consumers a repair?
From 31 July 2026 (the date national rules apply), manufacturers of products with EU repairability requirements (household appliances, phones, tablets, washing machines...) must repair them at a consumer's request within a reasonable time and at a reasonable price, using the common European repair information form; the guarantee is extended after a repair.
- Who must?
- Manufacturers of goods listed in Annex II of the directive sold to consumers in the EU, and importers or distributors when the manufacturer is outside the EU.
- What to do?
- Check whether your product is on the list (Annex II: washing machines, fridges, vacuum cleaners, phones, tablets...).
- Prepare the European repair information form (price, time, conditions).
- Offer spare parts and repair instructions at a reasonable price; do not block repairs with software.
- Where to file?
- Nothing is filed; the form is given to the consumer on request.
- Who checks?
- National consumer protection authority
- Fine
- A directive: each member state sets the penalty in its own law (for Croatia we follow the Official Gazette).
- What if I am already late?
- Prepare the form and a channel for repair requests; a reseller that is not the manufacturer needs to know who repairs.
What gets said wrong online
Wrong: "It applies to all products."
Right: The repair obligation applies to products with EU repairability requirements in Annex II; for the rest, guarantee rules apply.
